Pipeline System


Thappline's pipeline system designed to deliver various types of petroleum products through the single pipeline controlled by SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) System, a computer system used for controlling oil transportation via pipes that capable of sending commands to pumping stations, terminals and any points of the pipeline. Data transmission is performed through fiber optic cables installed in parallel with the pipelines. The system can automatically detect oil leakage, send out alarm signals and control the opening/closing of valves in case of emergency.

Currently, Thappline provides petroleum pipeline transportation service in 3 main routes:

-  Sriracha-Saraburi pipeline is 255 kilometers long and designed with maximum delivery capacity of 26,000 million liters/year. The route starts from the pumping station in Sriracha, Chonburi Province, receiving oil from Esso Sriracha refinery, Thai Oil Refinery, PTT Oil Terminal and Chonburi Terminal Co., Ltd. to the downstream terminals in Lumlukka District, Pathum Thani Province and in Saohai District, Saraburi Province; with the dedicated pipeline to Don Muang Airport Oil Terminal.

-  Map Ta Phut - Sriracha pipeline has been expanded from Sriracha to connect with PTT Global Chemical Refinery and Star Petroleum Refinery in Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate. This pipeline is 67 kilometers long and designed to have the maximum transportation capacity of 10,600 million liters/year.

-  Lumlukka - Suvarnabhumi pipeline has been expanded from Lumlukka Oil  Terminal to Suvarnabhumi Airport Terminal, at 38 kilometers in length with the capacity to transport aviation fuel for aircrafts at Suvarnabhumi Airport to support the total demand of 100 million passengers/year.

The petroleum pipeline system has been designed and built with highest safety standards

  • - The pipelines are made of carbon steel and buried underground.
  • Internal and external pipeline surfaces are coated with FBE (Fusion Bonded Epoxy) to prevent corrosion.
  • - The Cathodic Protection System has been installed to prevent the pipes from corrosion.
  • - Concrete coating is used to cover the external surfaces of pipes and the pipe sections placed underwater or in locations with soft ground.
  • - Block valves have been installed at every 16 km along the line with officers in place for 24 hours monitoring.
  • - Inside the pipeline is cleaned with Cleaning Pig according to set procedures.
  • - Inspection of pipeline integrity is conducted to detect metal loss and deformations to the internal and external of pipeline using Intelligence Pig is performed every 5 years.
  • - The Pipeline Surveillances are set up to monitor throughout the line together with the warning signs and 24 hours emergency contact number.

The important pipeline controlling/operating systems are:

-          The ESD (Emergency Shutdown System): In case of emergency, the systems capable of activating the on-off function of oil pumps and send a command to close ESDV at the terminals.

-          The HIPPS (High Integrity Pressure Protection System) is a system that controls and monitors the fuel pressure inside the pipeline to prevent the overpressure that may cause damages to the system.

-          The PIMS (Pipeline Integrity Management System) is a system that checks for oil leakage throughout the lines in the system, having the control center at Lumlukka Office, Pathum Thani Province.
